Hydroponic Project – Update 6 [FAILED]

As the title suggests, my hydroponic project failed! ༼ つ ಥ_ಥ ༽つ

The roots has rotten and the plants themselves just withered away. I still don’t know why, still a lot of readings to do to find out! Could it be winter and there had been plenty of rain? Or did I cut the wick too wide, maybe should have used smaller sized? Or maybe I should have put some tiny holes in the container where I laid the perlite for breathing? I did a bit of research and found few bloggers mention that growing chilli is indeed very challenging, so maybe I should have started with other vegetables like lettuce or pak choy first.

But anyway, will wait until winter passes and the weather is warmer before I attempt on this again

Hydroponic Project – Update 5 [HELP PLEASE]

Not so much of a green-thumb I am, two of the plants are dead now 😥 and I am left with only one of the chilli plant now. Hopefully, this one will grow strong 🙂

The shallots were showing good growth before and somehow one day it just turned dead, I suspect it because I left them all in the balcony and we had a day of very strong wind here in Sydney which might have pulled the root off the perlite. Whereas my other chilli plant somehow just dried up and withered, still unsure why that happens, there are still plenty of nutrients mix in the bottle. Anyone can help with guidance is very much appreciated.

DAY 20

Another brief update on my hydroponic project:

  • the shallots grow fast! I have put another shallot root to the same plastic bottle
  • I moved the tiny chilli sprouts to new plastic bottles, they show very slow developments. Not sure whether this is normal, or have I overcrowd the container with two sprouts each? Or, maybe the nutrient is not right? I guess we’ll find out later how they will grow

Hydroponic Project – Update 3

hydroponic day 9

A short update on my hydroponic project.

I have stuck a root part of shallot to the plastic bottle thinking that my chilli seeds will not germinate in it, and it such a surprise to find a tiny sprout coming out this morning. The shallot also looks good or at least it isn’t dying as far as I can tell 🙂

Now I will need to prepare more plastic bottles for transfering those little chilli sprouts in to when they are a little more bigger.

Hydroponic Project – Update 2

Please read here for my initial research here and first update in here.

It has been five days since I put few chilli seeds in the plastic bottle hydroponic and everyday I have looked into the piles of perlite only to find not any living signs whatsoever. So I started research on this again, how to start germinate chilli seeds to be used in hydroponic and stumbled on a post about germinate the seeds in wet facial cotton pads. It claims that within 24 hours you should be able to see some developments.

Came home from work, I tried to dig in to the perlite with a toothpick to find those little seeds. I found three out of the five I put into the perlite, in fact 2 of them have sprouted tiny little roots! Ah well, just transfer them all in to the wet cotton pads. I also added two more, just in case those three will not going to survive.

Here are the pictures:

Update day 6:

When I checked on them this morning, one of those which had sprouted tiny roots yesterday has shown more growth 😀  I am curious to find out how the other seeds are going, whether they are going to live as well.

More updates to come, fella!
